Internal Support
Farmers:
- In terms of internal support, peasant farmers support the FARC through cultivating coca crops which are used in the production of cocaine. FARC is extremely involved in the drug trade, and need people to continue to grow coca so that cocaine may be distributed throughout the world. Recently, the Colombian government and FARC have been negotiating peace talks, which in turn would cut off farmers from cultivating coca. Farmers have spoken out about their worry for this - going back to cultivating cacao crops would significantly drop the amount of money they make.
Law Enforcement:
- Law enforcement is extremely corrupt in Colombia due to the FARC unseen presence. Members of FARC bribe law enforcement agents and officers saying that they will ensure their protection if they receive information from them. This information could be things such as planned arrests, planned raids, and how investigations proceed. Prosecutors, judges, and penal officials have also been known to take bribes from FARC. Prosecutors won't prosecute, judges won't convict, and penal officials won't detain criminals.
External Support
Cuba:
- It has been said that Cuba has given the FARC medical care as well as political consultation.
Brazil:
- FARC expanded their cartels into Brazil. Brazil kind of tag-teams with FARC in the drug trade.
Ecuador and Venezuela:
- Both countries are safehavens to FARC. Ecudaor is seen as a safehaven because of its inability to control borders, and Venezuela because of its difficult terrain and the apparent laissez faire complicity and demonstrated support of Caracas for the FARC.
IRA:
- The IRA was caught giving the FARC explosives management training.
